New color trend : Yellow !

To reboost your interior, here’s a cheap little trick easy to make!
As simple as putting the icing on the cake, add a touch of yellow!

For inspiration, here are some examples using this principle. Depending on your budget, you may decide to purchase a yellow decoration item or just to repaint an object such as a vase or a stool.

Closet and pale yellow vase agree with this interior very bright pastel colors.

Another example of yellow in a kitchen cupboard with white furniture.

“Wanaka is more than a place. It’s a way of life. Here, design is defined by our natural environment. Pure, rugged, uncomplicated, honest, mystical and inspiring: living down here, it’s impossible not to be connected with nature.”

DIY : colorful plant pots

To continue the serie of articles on how to enhance your interior in a low budget, here is the last creation I made : colorful pots for little plants in the kitchen.

Cost of this project : 5 $NZ for the pots, 6 $NZ for the paint and 12 $NZ for the flowers/earth.  TOTAL : 23 $NZ

The plants : gardening shop or supermarket ?

The initial idea was to plant aromatic plants like parsley or basil, to use them while cooking. We can find some cheap ones in the supermarket. I tested it but I don’t recommend it, or at least not during winter. Those plants grow under solar lamps before being displayed in the supermarket. Once brought back home, they need lots of sun and heat, which is tricky to get during winter. My poor aromatic plants didn’t survived. I learnt from that, and went to buy normal flowers in a gardening shop after asking for good advices from the seller. They still have some cheap plants, those ones were at 1,87$NZ/plant.
So far, my new flowers look happy !  Gardening Shop wins !

The pots : gets them at the recycling center !

Little pots aromatic plants

In Wanaka (New Zealand) at the moment, we have access to this fantastic place called “Recycling center” where you can find already used items. It demands a bit of search and imagination, but that’s where I found 3 little pots in a brown earthy color. Different shapes and colors, but that’s for the charming aspect !

The picture here has been taken when the aromatic plants were still surviving !!

The paint : get test pots

Instead of buying expensive acrylic paint available only in the primary colors, I got 2 little Resene “test pots” that are made for testing paint color on walls. Their volume of paint is just perfect for the size of the pots (I even have left overs), and you have the freedom to choose between a laaarge range of colors.

Here are the colors I chose : Grey/light blue “Longitude and Guardsman Red which will go along with the original brown pot.
The reason why I chose those colors is to go well with the rest of the apartment which has grey carpet, brown leather couch, light grey/earthy walls and wooden table. My goal was to add a punchy touch of vitamin in the kitchen that goes along with natural shade like wood colors. The red turns out to be brighter than I thought but I am quite happy with the result.

DIY : fabric on can

In the following posts, I’ll show you how to customize your interior decoration with very low budget.

Today : how to create a decorative pen holder.

What you need :

  • Fabric patterns (old second hand cushion covers are so cheap and perfect for that)
  • Scissors
  • Double sided tape
  • Can, any size
  • Iron
Here s the fabric I’m gonna use :

  1. Cut the fabric in the same height of your can adding 2 centimeters. Make sure the length is longer than the perimeter of the can. Reverse each side one centimeter inside and iron it flat.
  2. Add some double sided tape around the top and the bottom of the can. Add a straight tape line too.
    Double sided tape
  3. Remove the other side of the tape and start sticking the fabric on the can along the straight tape, and all around the can. Make sure the fabric is well tight for a better looking.
  4. To finish to stick the fabric on the can, place another straight double sided tape on the already stuck fabric. Cut the left over fabric so that it will come just above the tape. Stick the fabric on the tape. Press strongly.
  5. Congratulations it is finished !

Kitchen tip : declutter and reorganize

Here are a few simple tips to make your kitchen a better place while staying within a budget.

1. Declutter: 0 €

We often tend to keep lots of little things visible in the kitchen, some to have them handy, others because they are pretty or sentimental. Then gradually, we find ourselves faced with an amalgam where we finally can’t see … anything!

To feel comfortable in a room, we have to be able to free our mind. Thus, by leaving some empty spaces, it appears that we have always some room left to add things if necessary. We feel more free. Conversely, if the space is cluttered, you feel overwhelmed and adding an element is impossible.

Here’s an example:
BEFORE: Doing the dishes seem a chore. AFTER: What a pleasant place to do the dishes with a view of the greenery!

cluttered kitchen   Uncluttered kitchen

What we did here:

  • Remove the little trinkets and postcards,
  • Place garlic and onions elsewhere (because in front of the window, they germinate faster!)
  • Keep only a few decorative elements of the same style (up to three),
  • Add a little greenery, a few leaves considered as weeds in your garden can give a completely different style to your home!
  • We voluntarily leave the tomato, it gives a touch of color, and makes cooking more alive, more human.

Now, what to do with all that has been removed here?

2. Rearrange intelligently: for less than 40 €

  1. Where to display the postcards?

One solution might be to install this magnetic chalkboard on one wall of the kitchen. IKEA, € 14.95

If you only have a smaller space or if you want to customize a wall, try painting covered with magnetic chalkboard paint. Expect to pay about € 12 per 250 ml of paint Magner, about 0.5 m in 2 to 3 layers.

Black paint : About 13 € pot 300mL at Castorama.

  2. Where to keep the garlic and onions?

Under your wall cabinets, install a bar GRUNDTAL available at IKEA and by mail order, 40 to 80 cm for a price of € 2.99 to 3.99.
On this bar, you can hang all sorts of things, such as cutlery drainer, which would nicely carry the garlic and onions! Its price: € 4.99.

IKEA is filled with good tips and affordable products to complement the rail and free up the workspace: Click here to view products suitable for the walls.

  3. What about all those little decorative items left?

If you value these objects and find them all nicer than each other, try to sort them in groups of 3 or 4 of the same style. Then, just display some of these objects and keep the others in the closet. You can then change your setting to suit your desires, without having to get rid of your little decorative objects.

The result: a stylish kitchen, tidy, and pleasant to live for less than 40 euros!

Wall Paper size XXL

This is a new way to hang wall paper on the wall. Throught this website, you can print XXL wall paper that you can custom with your own picture as well.

A large picture displayed on a wall in a room will create an effect of depth and the room will thus look larger.

The price : about 300€ for a large wall (L 372 x H 248.5 cm). You have the choice of any size.

The following picture is from a french TV show called “Maison à vendre” (House for sale). The design of this living room has been created by Sophie Ferjani, a french interior designer.
